Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. At the age of five the father was a carnival barker and left her mother no option but to be a cleaning woman and waitress to support her family. Ruth was raised in the poor tenement district in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. She left school after two years in order to study acting. It was not without difficulties. After landing a gig at New York as a model for a detective magazine, she had a difficult time trying to find jobs in the stage. Following a short period as a hat-wearing club girl after which she decided to come back home to the United States and quit her position. In Boston, she worked to make the ends meet by working as an usherette in the morning, while in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she was a drama student.
